Bijoya Sawian

Bijoya Sawian is a writer and translator from Shillong Meghalaya.

After her schooling in Loreto Convent Shillong, she did her graduation in English Honours from Lady Shri Ram College New Delhi and her post-graduation in English from Miranda House Delhi University.

Her valuable translation works have been published by Vivekananda Institute of Culture, Guwahati and Ri Khasi Press, Shillong. Among them are The Teachings of Elders, The Main Ceremonies of the Khasis, About One God and Myths, Legends and Folk Tales. The Teachings of Elders (Ka Jingsneng Tymmen) is the Khasi book of ethics and etiquette, a literary masterpiece comprising of 109 stanzas and written in Khasi by Radhon Singh B Kharwanlang and first published in 1901. Sawian’s translation-the only translation of this work- was first published in 1997. It is now in its third edition.

Bijoya Sawian is the first Khasi writer whose work of fiction has been published in English. Her debut novel, Shadow Men which received excellent reviews was jointly published by Penguin India and Zubaan New Delhi in 2010.

This was followed by a collection of short stories A Family Secret and other stories published by Zubaan New Delhi in 2014.

Sawian has contributed several articles, essays and stories to journals, newspapers and magazines both in India and abroad.

She is currently working on a new collection of stories titled –Flights to Freedom and translating the Songs of Seng Khasi.

She lives in Dehra Dun . She is the Chairperson of The Annfield Senior Secondary School affiliated to CBSE , Delhi.
