Ashali Varma graduated from Lady Shri Ram College (University of Delhi) in 1973 with Honours in English Literature. She schooled in The Lawrence School, Sanawar, India, where in 1969, on her graduation, she received the President’s Gold Medal for Best All-Round Student.
She started her career with the International Commentary Service Inc. New York (ICS) in the 1990s as Associate Producer and later served as Executive Director for a series of documentaries that were shot on location in 18 different countries. “The Great Global Bazaar” and “Of Snakes and Software: India at the Crossroads of Change” are among the notable documentaries she has been involved with as a producer and production coordinator. The 23 documentaries were shown on the Discovery Channel and Public Broadcasting Services in the US and other countries around the world.
Varma went on to become the Executive Publisher of The Earth Times, New York, a bimonthly publication. As bureau chief of The Earth Times, she helped to publish daily papers at the UN Social Summit in Copenhagen, the UN Population Conference in Cairo, the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing, and Habitat II at Istanbul. She then worked as the Editor for Choices magazine (UNDP), New York, and commissioned stories by mainstream journalists on UNDP’s work in the field.
Ashali Varma received “The Global Award for Media Excellence” for the “Best Population/Enviroment Reporting Effort” in 1997 by the Population Institute, Washington. She now lives in Delhi and can be contacted at [email protected]
