Retelling the Traditional Ballads of Garhwal

Author: Anjali Nauriyal
Publisher: Uttarakhand

Award Category: English Non-fiction
About the Book:

The book is an effort at keeping the dated art of story-telling and legendary ballads of Garhwal alive by penning them in English before these oral narratives are dissipated.
“These narratives have come down through the oral tradition. The singers of these tales have mostly died in the past few years and with them have been lost a very valuable part of our tradition,” states Dr Nauriyal.
This unique anthology presents some of the carefully selected popular ballads against a huge corpus of tales, as it is difficult to document them all. Her intention in writing a book on folklore is to enlighten the youth through glimpses of the earliest literature, historical and legendary chronicles. “Baadis’ or the traditional singers and dancers praise and glorify the legends in their folk songs.
