Things to Leave Behind

A rich, panoramic historical novel shows you Kumaon and the Raj as you have never seen them.

Author: Namita Gokhale
Publisher: Penguin Random House India

Award Category: English Fiction

Review:

Namita Gokhale's fiction helps us rise above the crimson tide of Uttarakhand's history, especially of Kumaon. Things to Leave Behind is a poignant tale of love, ennui and nostalgia.

Gokhale's fiction is a work of historical exegesis which critiques subaltern theories and focuses on feminist history in a small, erstwhile neglected area of Himalayan India. Gokhale's historical fiction written in a poetic style echoes J G Farrell's works, especially The Siege of Krishnapur. It is this original appropriation of literary and actual history that recommends this book for the first prize in the English-fiction category. This book will go on to win many more prizes in the future.
