An Author’s Word: Anushka Ravishankar
1. If not an author which other creative field would one find you in and why?
A mathematician, because logic and how it can lead from hypothesis to proof has always fascinated me. And if it’s surprising to see mathematics being called a creative field, you should read some of the elegant proofs in abstract algebra!
2. What does the written word mean to you?
Sound, the creation or sometimes destruction of meaning and the exploration of complexities that are hard to explain.
3.Your personal favourite five authors in any genre.
- Lewis Carroll
- Kazuo Ishiguro
- Frances Hardinge
- Harper Lee
- Charles Dickens
This is my list today. Tomorrow it might be different.
4. What is your favourite word, in any language, and how would you describe its meaning?
‘Schadenfreude.’ Mostly because I like the sound. But I do love German words that have complex meanings -like zeitgeist and Weltenschauung. Schadenfreude means pleasure derived by one at the misfortune of another.
5. E-Book or physical book? What do you prefer and why?
Physical. Because I like to go back to read earlier pages sometimes and that’s so hard to do in an ebook. You don’t have a visual sense of where the page might be.
